County Longford is situated in the middle of Ireland and belongs to the province of Leinster. It covers an area of 1,091 kmē and is one of Ireland's smallest counties. The production of oats & potatoes as well as the cattle & sheep rearing are only some of the agricultural activities. It is a county of quiet farmland with occasional low hills and pleasant views of river and lake. The capital is Longford City. The county museum, illustrating the history of Longford, is located in the city as well as the St. Mel's Cathedral, a Renaissance-style building of grey limestone. In the town of Ardagh, the Ardagh Heritage Centre & Village, tells the history of the town - see lovely Victorian houses grouped together. Longford offers beautiful scenery with lake, bog, pasture and wetland. The highest point is Carn Clonhugh with 916 feet. In general the northern part of the county is hilly, whereas the southern part is low-lying.
